The UCSF Center for Healthcare Value (CHV) solicits “great stories” about ways our community has reduced out-of-pocket expenses for our patients. These stories often group into 5 categories: reducing out-of-pocket costs of medications, reducing costs of testing, reducing costs of services, reducing costs of travel, and improving patient experience
This year, we would like to highlight a submission from Rebecca Leon, PharmD focused on reducing out-of-pocket costs of medications.
“The pharmacists, nurses and social worker of the Care Transitions Outreach Program (CTOP) worked together to get a patient's paromomycin covered for $0 for the full treatment course through a patient assistance program when Medi-Cal denied coverage and it was going to cost the patient $8000+ out of pocket. Interprofessional collaboration was ESSENTIAL in resolving this patient's medication access issue!”
We are excited to share this story in hopes that you will be inspired to integrate an awareness of out-of-pocket expenses incurred by patients into your practice—and feel empowered to implement novel strategies to reduce them.
The submission link stays open throughout the year, so please feel free to add your stories about reducing out-of-pocket expenses for our patients as they arise.
